The huge oven is the heart of the stove. Revolutionary design makes total sense, yet is the total opposite of every wood cookstove on the market.

Other stoves try to pull the smoke over the top of the oven, down the side, around the bottom, and then back out the top. Heat rises naturally, it makes more sense to vent the firebox off of the side so the heat travels under the oven, up the side, over the top, and out of the flue. This also significantly reduces the creosote build up which can be difficult to clean out.

Kitchen Queen with Optional Warming Oven

Optional Water Reservoir

The Kitchen Queen has an optional 17 or 24 gallon water reservoir system that heats water via the radiant heat from the stove. The water reservoir is recommended for use if the water inside the reservoir will be used and drained on a daily basis. The water reservoir comes with a black hose, spigot, fittings and a plug (see photo below).

Optional Water Coil

Water coil pictured above (center) must be ordered separately. The black hose (outside) and fittings are included with the water reservoir. No fittings come with the water coil. Cold water enters the firebox through a heat exchanger (water coil) and converts it to hot water with no moving parts or electricity. The heat exchanger can be connected to a large hot water tank for use throughout the whole house.

long term follow up review

We have now used our KQ 380 cookstove for over 4 years. I can't say enough what a fine stove it has been to heat and cook our large log house. I made numerous modifications which I described in previous reviews chiefly adding thick firebrick to the entire firebox and that has performed flawlessly. The sides of the stove are not even hot, ash is minimal and the fire often burns blue so obviously firebox temperatures are very hot but so far no plate warping. Woody made similar changes to a Kitchen Queen and reported similar results. It is a superb pizza oven quickly yielding the high temps essential to good pizza crusts(500-700 deg). I modified the door with a pane of borate silicate glass but Woody has done a far better job with his design. The only negatives for this stove are that it is VERY heavy and very Amish plain, like their buggys. The ash cleanout is in the back which we cannot access because we surrounded our stove with granite and concrete. The cleanout needs to be in front. We are able to clean it out with a modified vacuum cleaner. The low price Woody sells this stove for makes it a screaming deal and if function trumps beauty, I doubt any cookstove is superior to this Amish Gem. WE may be ordering a the larger 480 in the future and plan on getting the glass firebox and oven doors made by Woody.

Hello Obadiah's Staff,
Thank You for all your hard work getting us our wood stove and chimney parts! We finally got all the bits and pieces of the chimney and our stove has been up and keeping us warm and fed for over a week now. In the end the one chimney piece that we had to wait for was delivered by an old friend of ours who usually drives for UPS in another area. We made contact with him and his family again which was a great bonus. Thanks again for sticking with this and providing a great wood cook stove. I’ll attach a picture of it installed.
They are so great, I bought 3!!

The KQ is an amazing cookstove!! We bought our first one in Utah when we lived on the side of a mountain! It heated the house and we could cook at any time, it was amazing. We then moved to Missouri and brought our KQ with us. We bought a second one to heat our sons house, and they love it. I just purchased the Green and Cream KQ480 special edition to replace the black KQ480 we have in our house as it matches the kitchen decor and we will move the black KQ480 into our building with the greenhouse for winter heat and food preparation. They are simply the best stove on the market. We heat our 3000 sq ft house with no problems and it has been a very cold winter. We cook on it. We Love it!!

Hello again,

I was just sitting here and thanking God for the wonderful heat this wood cook stove puts out. This makes the 3rd year we have been using the Kitchen Queen; and what a cook stove. This year has had some very cold days and with a wind chill down as low as –25 below. I have bought fuel oil back in the first week of November and haven’t bought any since; where before we would have had the tank filled once a month. Thanks to the people who labor to make our comfort here in PA. What a blessing we have received. In the past 3 years this Kitchen Queen has saved us several thousand dollars. It heats our home with ease, plus we use it for cooking and baking. My wife now would rather use the Kitchen Queen to cook on than our electric stove. We have had no problems at all; I mean "0" problems! I can’t tell you enough how much we are pleased with the purchase of this excellent crafted product . The quality is just outstanding, and the best money I ever spent. One truly happy customer here in PA.
Please share this note with everyone involved, because they truly need a pat on the back.

May God truly bless you all and may the new year be fruitful in the Lord.

We installed the Kitchen Queen 480 into our one story home. Our house is about 4,300 square feet with nine bedrooms and a 1,200 square foot living room. The dining room is next to the living room and that's where we installed the Queen. This morning, we decided to see how well the Queen could heat our home and stoked it up per Obadiah's instructions. To our surprise, it heated even the most distant corner of our house which is probably sixty feet away from the stove. The temperature outside is 34 degrees today so a really cold day might be more challenging but then we only had the stove really working for an hour or so.

We purchased the Queen because we wanted an emergency energy backup should zombies take over Oregon (a distinct possibility). It appears it will be more than enough. We don't usually have much freezing weather but our home is large with much of the ceiling being over 12 feet high so if it will heat a home like ours, I think it will heat a more normal home in a much colder climate. We haven't cooked on it much and I suspect our challenge there will be regulating the heat but the Queen is more than able to supply the heat we need for cooking or heating. We are well pleased

Our 480 arrived and after setting it up, could not be more pleased with the quality and service we received. This has to be the best designed and looking stove on the market. We have a 3500 sq.ft. log home and when it gets -40 in northern Alberta I know we will be comfortable. We couldn't of been more pleased with the fast service we received from Obadiah's. When the power goes out we will always be warm and fed.

I bought the smaller Kitchen Queen from Obadiah's almost two years ago. It was delivered last July (the factory had a bit of a backlog) in perfect condition; the crate was so sturdy it took two of us about fifteen minutes with a prybar just to get one side off.

I finally got it installed this spring and it is AWESOME!!!! The firebox is the best I have ever used, it takes huge logs and holds a fire well over the advertised eight hours (I have beech wood, dried about a year). The "Supercharger" works just as they say: I had a good fire and the oven was at about 250 degrees F when I opened it; within five minutes the temperature went up to 475!

If you have the summer grate (well worth the money in the summer!) be sure to use small, split wood as dry as possible.

Overall, I could not be happier with my KQ!

Finally, the customer service folks here at Obadiah's are right on top of their game and one of the friendliest I have ever talked to!

From our first contact with Obadiah's Woodstoves, we were impressed with being treated like we were their most important customer. Many hours were devoted by Woody and Annette, talking with us and providing us with valuable information in order to establishing which cook stove would be precisely what we needed. Our Kitchen Queen 480 arrived in perfect condition exactly as promised. Woody spent many hours via e-mail and photographs coaching me through the installation process and helping to establish the best possible stove piping arrangement for my installation. The result is a beautiful cook stove installation that works perfectly and exactly as expected. This success is largely attributable to the time and effort that Obadiah's Woodstoves was willing to provide in order to insure our complete satisfaction.

Obadiah's Woodstoves is in my experience an exceptional business. The owners, Woody and Annette Chain, as well as their employees, are friendly and courteous, knowledgeable and helpful. They do exactly what they say they will do, promptly and efficiently. I could not ask for a better business with which to work, and I highly recommend them to anyone.

I just spent an hour on the phone speaking with Woody. I had my heart set on a very pretty, shiny, old-fashioned wood cookstove and after speaking with Woody and learning so much more about stoves, I am now leaning toward a totally different but much more functional stove. Thank you Woody for spending the time educating me. I will come to you when I have the cash to buy my stove.

I want to thank Woody for the recommendation of the Kitchen Queen. I called last May and he talked me into purchasing this stove instead of a 'prettier' one I had picked out. We live in a 5000sq ft house and with the exception of a bedroom in the back corner this unit heats it all. It has far exceeded our expectations and learning to cook on it has been educational and fun. Still trying to get the oven temp right. I have a question. Is it more efficient to heat with the oven door open or closed? It also seems to be a "cat magnet". Our cats can be found sleeping behind it most the time.

Thanks again , Woody, for a superior product.

We had a Gem Pack Flame View wood cook stove for 8 years. Had lot of trouble with creosote. Not a true air tight stove. Beautiful but not efficient. Just got our new Kitchen Queen #380 via Fed-X in perfect condition. Two of us got it set up in about two hours. We used three pipes about 34 inches long under the 2x4's the stove was bolted to as a easy way to move the stove into our house. We have raised 5 children and used four different cook stoves. This KQ is 1000% better. Our old Gem Pack Flame View was beautiful but not a fully air tight stove and we had creosote problems and it was a real job to keep cleaned out. It would be unwise to buy any other. The 380 is perfect for a large family and/or a small home of 1500 sq. feet. The heat is steady! The oven is perfect! The easiest stove ever to use. We bought the extra shelf but it had no instructions but was easy to figure out. We cleaned the stainless steel top with Simple Green.

We've had the KQ480 since last Sept. & have been using it for all our cooking and heating needs since then. Our house two stories and about 1200 sq ft. We wanted the larger oven, and I'm glad we went with the 480. We've had no problem baking multiple pizzas, a turkey, bread, cookies etc. We get temperatures down to -30 degrees Celsius up here, and the KQ always kept us toasty even though we haven't put any insulation in the floor. One complaint is that the warming oven is poorly designed. It's not wide enough to accommodate a dinner plate and the door folds up instead of down which makes getting things in and out awkward. We probably wouldn't spend the extra money on it if we were to do it again. We also find the thermometer very inaccurate, but Woody has suggested that's it's defective and to send it back to KQ. One final plus of the KQ; I find it draws really well, and it's really easy to build a fire in the cold stove.
Top of the line!

If you are looking for a wood cook stove, I highly recommend the Kitchen Queen. I have had mine for a year and a half and it is the best stove you could ever have. It burns so clean and efficient and if you use properly seasoned wood, it has very low maintenance A once a year clean out is all that is needed. I love the oven. The oven cooks with moisture so food does not dry out. My granddaughter put in a piece of french bread to toast and forgot about it. I was putting something in for dinner 5 hours later and found her toast. It was very brown and crispy, but not at all burnt or inedible. We were surprised. The warming shelf on top keeps food at a serving temperature for hours. Obadiah Stoves is a wonderful place to purchase this stove. They will stand behind their products and spend time to work out any problems, (which I had with a different brand of stove) or questions you have. They are super to work with. Kitchen Queen is a top of the line quality stove. You will be happy with your purchase.

A very satisfied customer,

Hi Woody,

I just wanted to take a moment to thank you for our new Kitchen Queen Wood Cookstove. It is just AWESOME! I want to say that the stove is almost alive. It cooks our food, warms our house, and I can't wait to cook on it. Well, let me give notice that you can have your gas or electric stoves, I will take my wood cook stove. I swear that food cooked on this stove tastes better. I challenge you to prove me wrong. Our cat even likes sleeping by it. Obadiah's did all the work in ordering what I needed, and I installed it myself. Woody managed to have everything we needed on the first try - no reordering or changing parts. They know what they are doing. I ordered the bigger model. It is heavy, but I managed with the help of my wife and a couple of furniture dolly's to move it into place myself. I recommend, however, you get a couple of strong buddies to help move it into place. We feel like we have taken one more step toward getting ourselves off grid.

We could not be happier with this stove, Woody.

Review Update

Reviewer: Hugh Owens - Jackson WY
Having used the Queen for 2 years. I would like to update my mods to improve a very good stove. As noted, I added extra firebrick in much the same way Woody did to his 380. I think I added more however: all 3 back and side surfaces, even over the grate. I have since restored the grate to its original configuration. I added tile to the top of the oven by inserting pieces through the round lid opening. The oven temps were too high at the top and at the back of the oven. I moved the drip pan to the top inside as well. Now bread and baked goods cook evenly, as good as our big propane oven. I also moved the back splash and shelf BEHIND the flue to increase the depth of the cooking surface. I filled in the open spaces created with 1/4" plate drilled with 1/2" holes painted black. The right one is easily removed to use the flue diverter behind the stove. I had regretted not buying the 480 because of the smaller cooktop of the 380. Now the 380 is bigger. (I still wish I had a bigger oven.!!)
Great Cookstove!

Our Kitchen Queen 380 arrived intact in a sturdy plywood box. The fit and finish were superb. Once I had the "Queen" up and running, I was blown away by its combustion efficiency and heat output which heats our large log cabin. I modified the KQ, installing additional firebrick on all firebox surfaces. The fire burns with a blue flame once established. My criticisms of the stove are minimal. It is a VERY heavy stove. It could use a small viewing glass to keep track of the fire. The oven door thermometer reads 50 degrees low. The oven on the 380 is just big enough to be useful. My old cookstove had a large oven and a small firebox. Large firebox trumps large oven! I would recommend anyone wanting to cook with wood to consider this stove. This kind of heating and cooking appliance is a vital component to achieving a measure of self sufficiency in these troubled economic times. I would regard it as your second purchase after a good chainsaw.

We installed a Kitchen Queen 480 in the summer of 2010. The stove has transformed our lakeside cabin into cozy and sometimes piping hot cabin. We have cooked our Thanksgiving Turkey, the pies and all the sides this year exclusively on the kitchen queen. While I have some experience with wood-fired cooking it has been fun to see friends and family's excitement over the efficiency and comfort of this stove. The cookstove is now the cornerstone of our weekend retreat and has inspired visitors to write poems and draw hand sketches of the glorious stove. I have purchased many items in my 42 years on this earth and pound for pound, dollar for dollar this is the best money I have ever spent !!!!! The Almish have engineered a smart stove and built it with US steel. Woody and Annette and their crew completed the experience with wonderful service and patience with my long list of questions during the install process. Thanks for all your work.

This is a heavy, well built stove. It was well wrapped and crated and arrived in perfect condition.
It is simple and understated in design yet has thoughtful details that make it beautiful as well as functional.
The oven interior is easy to keep clean. The thermometer in the oven door makes it easy to keep the right temperature, especially for a wood-cooking beginner like me. I was surprised at how easy it was to cook with. My first dinner using the stovetop and oven turned out perfectly! (I read and learned to use smaller chunks of wood to get a hotter, better controlled fire.)
The grate in the bottom of the firebox makes it very easy to clean out ashes. The rails that go around the outside are helpful to avoid burns from getting too close. The buyer should keep in mind that the stainless top will darken with use, but the rails and trim stays clean and bright.
Every detail of this stove seems to be well thought out and well implemented. We could not be more pleased.
