La Nordica Suprema Wood Cook Stove Review

A beautiful, small, well-built cookstove
January 4, 2016
Reviewer: Paul Hearsey
My wife and I researched wood cook stoves for at least a year before deciding on this one. It was small, only about 24,000 Btu/hr, and we have a 1080 sq ft home. The very large oven and double-glazed glass door, with a triple-glazed firebox door, substantial firebox and enameled cast iron finish clinched the deal. It is a sturdy stove, weighing almost 400lbs, and the quality of the castings is excellent. Fit of the various parts is very good. The oven thermometer is in degrees Celcius, so be prepared to familiarize yourself with metric. Easy. The oven is smooth, glassy enameled steel, very easy to wash down and keep clean. The cooktop is cast iron with concentric rings forming two 'hobs'. We never remove them, as we don't want our cookware to get sooty, and the cooktop is very hot already.
A fire is easy to set and light. Unlike many cook stoves, this one does not back-puff smoke on startup. It does occasionally smoke a bit when adding wood to an established fire, so I don't linger with the door open. Perhaps a taller chimney would prevent this; I can't say. If I had utility power I would invest in a draft collar for any cook stove, as it guarantees easy starting. But, compared to other stoves I have used, this has better performance than most. The cooktop gets very hot, 600-800F, even with a slow fire, so very little wood is needed to cook with. Super efficient!
Only two concerns: first, the heat radiated to the rear. The nameplate says this stove can be within 150mm or 6 inches of a combustible wall. Don't do it! Our all-steel wall reaches 350F quickly because of radiating heat to the rear. A combustible wall would be at high risk of ignition. Make your wall non-combustible or keep perhaps 12 inches clearance. In my opinion that wall should always be steel, stone, brick or concrete anyways.
Second concern: the enameled cast iron finish. The front of the stove body, the doors and the drawer front are all heavy cast iron with an enamel finish. Every stove I have ever owned or used with an enameled cast iron finish had a hard, glassy finish. Shiny, beautiful and easy to clean. Unexpectedly, this cook stove came with a strange, porous, matte finish. It is hard to describe, but it is rough and impossible to wipe clean. A major blunder for this manufacturer, in my opinion. My wife wanted me to send it back. But this cook stove was perfect in every other way, so we decided to tolerate the lousy finish. I believe the 'anthracite black' finish is the proper glossy enamel, but check with Woody first. Overall, I'll give this stove a 9.5 out of 10 for design and styling, a 9.5 for accuracy and fit, an 8.5 for functionality, and a 4 for the terrible finish. We are very happy with our purchase overall, and will write an update after we've used this stove for a few months.
